3 Reasons Why Life is Better Sober

The following list is for anyone who overindulges in substance use. These are few of the reasons why I decided to get sober and come from my own personal experience.

  1. Life is hard enough sober

We live in a competitive society. The clearer minded you are, the better you can perform at your daily tasks. The more focused you can be. Sometimes drugs may make us feel like we are more focused, such as when we take stimulants. However, the quality of our work is not as good as we when we have a clear mind. We go on tangents and tend to ramble on. This is one of the reasons that I decided to get sober. Connecting with others is an important part of my life. When I used substances over seven years ago, I noticed that my ability to connect with others started to deteriorate. I would ramble, and I noticed I lost the attention of the people I was speaking with due their inability to follow my train of thought. I felt isolated and alone and made the decision to reclaim the part of me that could organize my thoughts in a presentable way by choosing a life of sobriety. It’s hard enough to keep people’s attention when you have clear thoughts, much less when your thoughts are disorganized or tangential.

     2. You have more energy

You don’t have to deal with hangovers or worrying about how you are going to get your next dose. You allocate your time and energy to being more productive. You can go anywhere and do anything and not have think about whether you have enough of your “fuel.” As long as you have access to food and water, then you are good to go. There is less to worry about and your anxiety levels are lower. You adjust to your surroundings quicker and you experience less fatigue.

      3. Life feels safer

If you are abusing drugs and alcohol, chances are that you know you are doing something that you should not be doing. You probably hide it from people around you. You probably get nervous that someone may catch you. You live in the shadows and you feel like you are concealing a dirty secret. This takes a toll on your ability to be genuine and authentic. It gives you a sense that you are in constant danger of being discovered, which feels unsafe. Feeling unsafe leads to excessive worry and anxiety, which is debilitating. When you choose sobriety, you do not have hide in the shadows. You can be your authentic self and not worry about your safety as much. You start to feel like a good person again. You experience less shame and you can walk around feeling more carefree. It takes a lot of hard therapeutic work to reach a point where you start to feel safe again, but it is achievable.

These are a few of the reason why I have chosen a life of sobriety. It has been the best gift that I have given to myself. If you need any help getting sober, please do not hesitate to reach out to me or any recovery community in your area.
